Answers to your Frequently Asked Questions

Question: When I try to register my copy of EZ-Landmark, Flight Simulator appears to lock up. How can I register?

Answer: Flight Simulator is not really locked up.

However, when Flight Simulator is running in Full Screen mode, EZ-Landmark is unable to draw the Registration dialog box.

To get around the problem, press ALT + ENTER or select Views | Full Screen from the menu to remove the check mark. This cancels the full screen mode of Flight Simulator. If you see a check mark in front of Full Screen of the View menu, then Flight Simulator is running in Full Screen mode. Clicking it or pressing ALT + ENTER removes the check mark.

When not in Full Screen mode, you can access the Abacus | EZ-Landmark menu and type your registration number. After you have registered, you can revert to Full Screen mode by pressing the Alt + Enter keys or selecting View | Full Screen from the menu.

NOTE: Press the Escape key [ESC] to return to Flight Simulator if it appears to be locked-up while trying to register while in Full Screen.

Question: How can I get the most current database for EZ-Landmark?

    Answer:

    Download the latest databases

Depending on the number of sites that you'd like to include, you can download additional databases to use with EZ-Landmark.

Here's a list of the current databases which you can user with EZ-Landmark:

    • Default (ez-landmark.dat) - This database is installed with the compact version of EZ-Landmark and contains 1200 Easter Eggs, 125 Mountain Peak sites + 4000 sites from the LargerWorldCities database + 37,000 sites from the USAConcise database.

    • USAConcise This contains 37,000 sites. The USA Concise database is derived from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) US-Concise listings. The data includes physical and populated place data for the United States and outlying territories. A very few names with diacritic marks or other non-Western characters may not appear correctly in EZ-Landmark. Using this database with WorldCitiesAndTowns database will result in many overlaps in towns and cities. USAConcise can be used as standalone coverage of the United States

    • LargeWorldCities - 4,000 sites which are the world's larger cities
    • WorldCitiesAndTowns - 21,000 sites which are a larger collection of world's cities and towns

    • UK-Ireland - 9700 sites covering the physical features of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

    • Utah - 17,000 sites throughout the state of Utah

    • DigitalChartWorld - 129,000 sites which are physical and populated features of the Earth outside of the USA.

    • 170000_EZ-Landmark - 170,000 sites that combine those in the Default database and DigitalChartWorld database. If you use this database, do not use USAConise, LargeWorldCities nor DigitalChartWorld - otherwise there will be many duplicate entries

    1. Click below to download the additional databases. You may have to right-click and choose "Save Target As" to download the database.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new entry in the database can be added using a text editor and separating the fields by the tab character.

From left to right the fields are

    1. Name of the site
    2. Latitude
    3. Longitude
    4. Elevation - for best view, use the elevation at the top of the objects
    5. Density code - tells EZ-Landmark to display this landmark when display is set to Low, Medium or Dense

Question: When I use EZ-Landmark, the names of a few sites are hard to read because they overlap one another. How can I reduce the amount of clutter?

Answer: There are several things that you can due to reduce the clutter. You can adjust the EZ-Landmark display from the EZ-Landmark options dialog. From your Flight Simulator menu choose Abacus | EZ-Landmark | Options like this:

    From the options dialog:

    1. Adjust Display - reduce the amount of information that is displayed for each site. If you display only the Landmark name, the messages are less cluttered.
    2. Adjust Landmark Density - each site in the database has a "density code", one of three values: Low, Medium or High. Change this field to display sites that have matching codes. Sites having a density of "0" are displayed when Landmark density is set to "low" or "medium" or "high". Sites having a density code of "1" are displayed when Landmark density is set to "medium" or "high". Sites having a density code of "2" are displayed when Landmark density is set to "high".
    3. Adjust Show landmarks up XX NM away - reduce the distance at which the information for each site appears. At 10 NM,information for more sites are displayed than at 5NM.
    4. Adjust Font size: use a smaller font size - change the font size of the display to medium or small
    5. Change the density code - change the density code for any entry in the database. The density code must have a value of "0", "1" or "2". This density code works in conjunction with #2 above.

Question:  EZ-Landmark displays the information for a site on the screen but I cannot see the landmark itself. What is the problem?

Answer: You can adjust the amount and detail (resolution) of 3D scenery from the Flight Simulator menu, not EZ-Landmark.

To display the maximum amount of 3D scenery, use the Flight Simulator menu: Options | Settings | Display and move the Scenery Complexity slider to the right until it is set to Extremely Dense. This ensures that all of the Flight Simulator 3D objects are displayed.
