Question: CFS1 only - Why does the aircraft carrier seem to disappear when viewing the aircraft from external (spot) view?

    Answer: They should be trees.

The truth is, it does not disappear but is rescaled. Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator uses a unique scaling method that scales certain objects based on their view perspective. In normal view while sitting in the cockpit, the carrier appears as normal size but from any other external perspective the carrier appears half scale.

    Try the following:
While sitting in the cockpit, press keypad "S" twice. You should now be viewing the aircraft from spot view and it appears as if there is no carrier. Now press the minus keypad [-] several times to view the aircraft from a distance. You will see that the carrier is indeed present, but scaled smaller. To return to the cockpit view, press keypad "S" once more.

At this time, this appears to be a limitation within the CFS1 engine when using some 3rd party developed objects and has not yet been resolved. As new information is discovered, we will continue to provide you with the latest product development.

Question: When opening Battle For Midway, I encounter the error message "Error Renaming Opening Video 2040". What can I do to fix this problem?

    Answer:

Start the Windows Explorer (Start | Programs | Windows Explorer), locate and display the contents of your main Combat Flight Simulator folder. (By default CFS is found in Program Files->Microsoft Games->Combat Flight Simulator)

In the right pane of the Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following files (the extension may not appear depending upon your Windows Explorer settings):

  • CFSENV_OPENING.DAT or CFSENV_OPENING
  • OPENING.AVI or OPENING
  • BFM_OPENING.AVI or BFM_OPENING

Be sure that you delete only these files. Continue, even if you do not find these files.

Now locate and open your main CFS \sound folder in the left pane of the Windows Explorer. Beneath you'll see another folder named \radio. Open the \radio folder.

Next open the folder named \German and double click one of the wav files. Perform the following step only if the voice has a Japanese accent:

    1. Verify that there is a folder named Deault_German. If you don't have this folder, do not continue
    2. Select the folder named Default_German
    3. Choose File | Rename from the menu and type: German[Enter]
    4. Exit the Windows Explorer

From the Desktop, double-click the Battle For Midway icon. You'll now be able to proceed with your combat.

Question: In the Coral Sea Missions 1 and 2 and Battle For Midway Missions 2 and 3, the SBD-3 Dauntless and F4F Wildcat run out of fuel when I push the X key. What can I do to complete the mission?

    Answer:

Please download the patch BFM_Update1.exe (711KB).

This patch file will update the affected aircraft in your CFS1 folder.
